- Gritty’s Portland Brew Pub opened in 1988. It became Maine’s first brew pub since prohibition and a leader in the state’s craft brew revolution. Since then, locals and visitors from around the world have been enjoying fine, small-batch ales. Gritty’s brews on-premise and serves great pub fare in an old world pub atmosphere.
- Gritty’s Portland Brew Pub is the perfect place to experience the ambiance of Portland’s Old Port.
Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio.
- We’re open everyday and you’re always welcome. Gritty’s has become a Maine institution, garnering many awards for Best Bar, Best Brew Pub and Best Beer. Stop in, have a pint and see where the legend began. Cheers!

The Old Porter will be on tap in Portland later in November. This beer is one for the “old skool” Gritty regulars. A classic English style porter with generous amounts of aroma hops blended with lots of chocolate malt in the grain bill & top fermented with our house yeast strain. This beer features a lovely, seductive malt back bone that tastes like chocolate, chicory then finishes with a reserved hop spice that transports the drinker to the wet & smoky streets of old London town. Grains: “Propino” 2-row Pale malt, plenty of chocolate malt, caramalt, malted wheat flour, torrified wheat pellets & black malt. Hops: Cluster & Goldings pellets used with whole Willamette cones.
They’ve gone down under in Portland with G’Day IPA . Brewed in October, there still might be a little G’Day IPA still on tap in early November. This IPA is a lovely straw color with a white creamy head, big tropical nose followed by notes of pineapple, melon & lemon rind. We used Elaa and Galaxy hops with Madrid Otter Pale, Rahr 2-row pale, PILSNER malts & flaked oats. ABV: 6.3%. The G’Day IPA will be replaced with a really special IPA
mid-month. Be sure to stop in Gritty’s Portland to see what this new rotating IPA will be.
‘TIS THE SEASON FOR CHRISTMAS ALE! Going on tap in Portland and Auburn in late November.
November heralds the return of our holiday seasonal, Christmas Ale. It’s a robust E.S.B. (Extra Special Bitter) full of holiday cheer. It scored 97 by Beer Advocate. Christmas Ale has a lovely, dark red/amber color. The ale has a chocolaty character followed by an earthy hop flavor with a fruity middle-to-end with hints of melon and pear. We brew our Christmas Ale to an original gravity of 1064 (about 6.2% ABV) which gives it a light warming feature.
You served us, now we’ll serve you. On Veteran’s Day, Saturday, Nov 11th, if you’re active duty military or a veteran you’ll get a free burger, fries and a beverage at any Gritty’s brew pub for lunch or dinner.
