Gritty’s Portland Brew Pub is the perfect place to experience the ambiance of Portland’s Old Port.

Since 1988, Gritty’s missions have been to craft the best beers possible, serve the very best pub food, and to have way too much fun doing both. For more than 30 years, Gritty’s has succeeded at all locations.

From its humble beginnings as a small brewpub in Portland’s Old Port, Gritty’s has been brewing authentic English ales and has grown to become the brewery of choice for thousands of Mainers and visitors alike. As Maine’s first brewpub since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the state’s second overall brewery, Gritty’s is proud to be one of the earliest pioneers of the brewing renaissance in Maine, with owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer helping to carve the path to where we are now. With two locations – in the heart of Portland’s Old Port and in the spirited downtown of Auburn on the banks of the Androscoggin River – Gritty’s has become a true Maine institution, garnering awards such as Best Bar, Best Brewpub & Best Beer.

“There are very few 30-year-old brewpubs in America; I’m pretty sure you could count them on one hand,” says Stebbins. “I know that does not fit into the ‘newest is best’ climate that rules Maine’s beer business these days, but, let’s be honest, how much time does a new brewery get to be ‘new’ these days? Gritty’s will always be the first.”

Our Fore Street location is in the heart of the historic district. Pull up a chair at our copper-topped bar. Strike up a conversation at our beer hall style tables. Take in the street life on the cobblestones of Wharf Street from our patio. Visit us and see where the legend began.

Cheers,
-A

Beers on Tap

Gritty McDuff’s asks that you please drink responsibly. Please don’t drink and drive.

***Pub Style Pale Ale, ABV: 5%

Original Pub Style captures what made people fell in love with craft brewing in the first place: a fresh, classic pale ale with plenty of hop character," says Brewmaster Ed Stebbins. Original Pub Style is a light copper-colored medium-bodied beer with a nice dry bite at the finish. A subtle combination of Cascade and Willamette hops give this ale a fine floral aroma and a slightly fruity undertone. The taste captures the freshness of a hand-crafted ale that goes right from the conditioning tank to your pint glass.

Halloween ale, ABV: 6.0%

Gritty's famous Halloween Ale makes its annual return for its 33rd year running! This ESB (Extra Special Bitter) features a robust malt backbone & two varieties of imported Goldings hops. One sip reveals a perfectly balanced beer that warms the palate with notes of cinnamon, molasses & fresh baked bread. Make sure to try a pint on cask! Remember: “No pumpkins were harmed during the brewing of this beer!”

Best Brown, ABV: 4.6%

We are proud to pour an OG Gritty’s beer, and old-school fan favorite. The original recipe comes from the Brasserie Lion D’Or in Quebec, one of Canada’s oldest brewpubs. This beer can be best described as an easy drinking session ale with a strong malt backbone & restrained hop presence. Cheers!

***Black Fly Stout, ABV: 5%

Black Fly Stout is an opaque black-colored brew with a cream-colored head. First there is a rush of mild roasted malt and subdued black currant fruitiness, then the roasted malt kicks things up a notch by unleashing an even burnt charcoal bitterness. Malt sweetness holds this brew together in the beginning, then the dryness sets in to make the mouth beg for more. Lingering suggestions of espresso and vague chocolate flavor make up the end. We use six different grains to brew this dark masterpiece and we balance the full palate with Oregon Willamette and Yakima Clusters hops. The Alström Brothers at Beer Advocate Magazine gave Gritty's Black Fly Stout a perfect 100 score and had this to say about our Stout: "One of the top stouts brewed in the US, very well balanced and is even more heavenly on nitro-tap. Certainly a stout lover's stout..."

*** Rotating IPA Series

A constantly rotating selection of hazy New England Style IPAs with varying hop profiles.

*** Rotating Seasonal - Scottish Ale

It takes a brave beer to stand up to a Maine winter. Gritty’s Scottish Ale returns every January to help you weather the season. Scottish Style Ale is our interpretation of the robust brews native to Scotland. It pours a clear burnished copper blended with woody brown color, a tan-colored foam head and a little lace. The aroma is sweet and fruity, with nutty and buttery tones. There’s a rich, slightly sweet first impression on the palate that rounds to a satisfying semi-dry hop finish. We use generous quantities of pale malt along with Munich and caramalts to give this ale a deep and complex profile. Beef stew would be a great pairing with this one. Sure to please the Braveheart in all of us.

Cask Beers

***These items are always on.

***Best Bitter on Cask, ABV 5%

Best Bitter was the first beer we brewed at our Portland brewpub. This true English classic has been the anchor of our draft selection ever since. Best Bitter is copper-colored, smooth and a little crisp with malty flavors of toasted grain and some residual sweetness that tastes a little caramel then fades to a slight hop bitterness. Make sure you don't drink this brew too cold; it will mask all of the true Bitter style flavors. We use Yakima Golding hop flowers when we brew this beer.
